Lahka Designs began with the intent to understand how to construct furniture differently — a desire to bring the structure and support of each piece into its design. The furniture in this line does not use layers or attempt to cover up the supports, but instead brings those features to the forefront, making them part of the aesthetic. The goal is to create less with more, partnering with extraordinary local craftsmen to create each individual piece. The unexpected results are beautifully-crafted pieces that are both strong and exceptionally light in weight.

Each piece of Lahka furniture combines thin, high strength European hardwood plywood with beautiful veneers — mahogany, walnut, and white oak — to create one of a kind furniture pieces. The details of these modern materials become ingrained in the texture and the beauty of the furniture. Traditional dovetail connections are combined with modern plywood materials to create incredible strength with minimal materials, a signature of the Lahka Design sensibilities.

Lahka Design pieces are constructed using 1/4-inch Baltic Birch plywood material and mahogany, walnut, and white oak veneers. Baltic Birch plywood is incredibly strong, produced in the region around the Baltic sea.

Hole patterns in seat and seat back areas remove materials, which in turn soften the surfaces and makes them more flexible.

Dovetail joints are critical to the strength and aesthetic of the furniture, as the interlocking nature and shape of a dovetail joint resists movement. The joint system is brought to the exterior face each piece, revealing the structure and the beauty of the furniture in an honest expression. The underside of the Lahka furniture is as beautiful as the furniture is from above. Craftsmanship and purpose can be seen from any vantage point.

Each piece of Lahka furniture is made of a single material. The hole patterns in the furniture surfaces vary from large in the center to small on the periphery. The surfaces are softened in the center where maximum flexibility is desired and stiffened at the edges where maximum structure is required. Light filters through the hole patterns, creating a visual lightness while revealing the thinness and structure of the underlying European plywood.

Each piece of Lahka furniture is pattern cut, assembled, and meticulously finished by talented local craftsmen. The process to build an individual piece takes several days, as it is hand-assembled and finished. The result is furniture like no other, of incredible strength and beauty — one of a kind pieces for a one of a kind experience; simple shapes, beautiful pieces, sophisticated thought.
